I work at a place with no refrigirator ;-) and I am wodnering what kind of meals can I prepare at home or buy and then take it with me there. I will need to keep it in my car, which will be a very hot place during the summer time. Do you have any ideas what I can get? ThanksHow to save money on (at work) food?
Go buy a cooler or you can just take peanut butter and bread. Anything shelf stable should be okay too. You might also take a sandwich and freeze it the night before then it should be ready to eat by lunch. How to save money on (at work) food?
My son uses an insulated lunch bag with a cold pack in it to keep his food cool without a refrigerator.
He usually pack leftovers from supper for the next days lunch.
Step 1: Buy an esky or a cooler bag. Put a block of ice in it during the day, and if you must keep it in your car, then put a blanket over it to insulate it and keep it cool.
However, I would suggest buying meals like noodles that you can just add boiling water to, or some leftovers that you can microwave but keep in the cooler bag until you need to. Or freeze a sandwich and let it thaw during the day until you need it (not recommended for meat sandwiches though).
Buy a refrigerator for you're work! Just kidding if you can't do that, then go to Wal-Mart or something and get yourself a cooler. If you have some extra money they even have coolers that you can plug into your car using your cigarette lighter and they don't use any ice or anything!
If you can get ahold of one of those or at least a cooler, you can pretty much bring anything you'd like to eat. (You never did mention if you have access to a microwave or not).
If you don't have a microwave you can bring limitless varieties of cold-cut sandwiches, peanut butter and jam sandwiches, salads, yogurts, fruit, juice, soda, pudding cups, etc. Anything that you can keep in the cooler, you can bring. You can even make yourself wraps as well. You can use pita bread or these tortilla-like rolls called Flat-Outs that are different flavors. Throw some lunch meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes in it and roll it up and toss it in a bag into your cooler.
If you do have a microwave, you could bring the old standby, hotdogs, frozen burritos, leftover chili, etc. You can chop up some chicken, throw in some peppers and some fajita mix the night before and make fajitas. When its done put it in ziplock containers and throw it in your cooler. Pack some tortillas and when you get to work you can heat it all up in the microwave.
You have a ton of options...don't let it worry you that there is no refrigerator, you can always get a cooler!
I like everyone's ideas about an insulated bag. My daughter does the same thing. She also brings stuff like carrot sticks, celery with peanutbutter and jello cups.
Healthy choice fresh mixers.
